Do You Remember Baby Girl (6)
Massimo was stunned.
Of all things for Laura, he hadn't expected that. She was pregnant with his child only to lose it. That in itself tortured him.
He felt sick.
Massimo leaned on the desk trying to process what Laura just told him.
She was pregnant, and lost the baby? What made it worse was the fact that he never returned her calls. He always saw the call but he never answered. Why?
Because he was weak.
He had to handle the danger that was lurking with his family. It turned out that the man who killed his father wasn't really dead, and they used the divergent to try and finish the job of killing him. As soon as he found out he had to send Laura away. They were already spotted and he didn't want her used as a bargaining chip. Granted he had just gotten on track with her, as their exploration of each other's bodies on the yacht awakened many things in him. But, he knew if he let her go, they would think Laura was only a one-night stand. So no more contact. He heard the messages she left and it killed him to not call her back. But he knew it was for the best at the time.
Now however he wasn't so sure.
......
Laura decided to go into town. The villa Massimo lived in wasn't too far from town and Laura decided she needed a break.
From everything.
She smiled at the mix of tourists and town people marveling at how a place could feel so old yet new. She saw a local bookstore and decided to explore it a bit. An hour later found her with a leather-bound journal and pen, her shiny new purchases from the store. She walked over to an outdoor cafe inhaling the warm clean air before taking a seat.
"What can I get you miss?"
"A lemonade."
"Coming right up."
Laura sighed before running her hands over the journal that would house her thoughts for a while. After she lost the baby she immediately went to therapy. She wanted to properly mourn her child, but not become crippled about it. She still felt that pain, but she was able to function. All because she sought out help. A lemonade was set in front of her and she was about to thank the waiter only to be surprised that it was Massimo.
"Massimo," she breathed out. The man grabbed a chair from the opposite table and pulled it until he was beside her. He picked up her hand and kissed it. She gasped at the unexpected contact and frowned when she saw nothing but regret.
"Massimo why-"
"Laura. I am so sorry for what I've done to you. For not returning to you. I promised to never leave you and at the first sign of trouble I split," he said to which her eyes tested up.
"I- " she stopped herself before shaking her head.
"What?" He asked genuinely.
She took a deep breath and tried but failed to keep the tremor out of her voice.
"I needed you and you weren't there," she gasped out. His eyes were pained as he gripped her hand tighter
" I know," he said firmly. "The only thing I can do is try to make amends. To show you that I will
Never leave you again," he said sincerely. Her eyes hardened as she glared at him.
"You've said all of this before."
"I know," he said gently. Laura was surprised at his quick agreeing tone.
"You're going to need to see that I'm serious. We created a life, Laura. Our love created a wonderful child. And although they weren't with us for long," he paused having to collect himself, "the child was ours. You loved it carried it and was there every step of the way. And now it is my responsibility to bear the brunt of never really knowing my first child." "Massimo-"
"No, Laura. And this is the price I have to pay for neglecting you when you needed me the most."
She saw his eyes glisten for a moment but just as quickly it was gone. He was Don Massimo. Head of the most powerful Sicilian mob. Crying in public was something he'd never do. Even if it was over his kid.
He leaned over and kissed her hand again before turning it over and kissing her warm palm. She shivered at his lips on her skin and the way his tongue flicked out briefly to taste her before pulling away.
"Laura, I know it's selfish of me to ask this but I want another chance. A real shot to prove to you I'm serious. Can you give me that? Can we work on being together again?
